Iuliia Mendel, a Ukrainian journalist, has been giving readers a glimpse into life during war ever since she documented her decision to leave Kyiv at the start of Russia's invasion. But she found out about the atrocities in the town of Bucha in the same way many non-Ukrainians did: through social media.
"No one can talk about anything else here in Ukraine," she writes in her latest dispatch. "The images of bodies on the streets, hands tied behind them, and the partially buried corpses in a mass grave seem to flash across every cellphone and laptop."
The town was recaptured recently, but the horrific images of dead civilians in the wake of Russia's retreat are now circulating the world, along with demands for war crimes investigations.
For Iuliia, it's a lot to bear — and not just for those who suffered in Bucha but also for the many others who remain under attack or occupation by Russian forces.
"How am I supposed to accept that there are no mechanisms in this world to stop this aggression?"
