Columnist Jason Rezaian was held for 544 days as a hostage in an Iranian prison. He draws on his experiences and subsequent reporting on Americans wrongfully detained abroad to explain why he's so concerned about WNBA star Brittney Griner. Griner, one of the most recognizable figures in the sport, was detained by Russian authorities last month.
"The timing of Griner's arrest and its subsequent announcement by the Russian Federal Customs Service — just as the United States ramps up sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine — should not be accepted at face value as mere coincidence," Rezaian argues.
"Whatever the details of Griner's case, we need to start looking at the arrests of Americans byauthoritarian countries with a critical eye informed by a new reality: More Americans are being wrongfully detained abroad, especially in moments of tension or conflict."
