Everywhere he goes, Gen. Mark A. Milley carries with him the "big green map" of Ukraine. As columnist David Ignatius describes the map, it "isn't actually big or particularly fancy, just a foot-square chart showing the locations, numbers and likely assault paths of the vast Russian force battering Ukraine." But the map, initial versions of which were ordered up by the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman beginning in March, offers what Milley and his aides believe may be "the most comprehensive operational intelligence in the history of warfare."
Ignatius is just back from a five-day, seven-nation trip with Milley to review operations on the Ukraine border, huddle with NATO partners and review the enhanced U.S. presence. His latest offering is an on-the-ground portrait of a military commander whose complex brief is to do whatever he can to help beleaguered Ukraine even as he seeks to avoid enmeshing his own forces in a military engagement that could easily escalate. Ignatius depicts Milley the barrel-chested, hockey-playing South Boston native, and Milley the Princeton graduate prone to quoting Clausewitz and invoking military campaigns from Valley Forge to Stalingrad.
"Milley's army," Ignatius writes, "is preparing for a war he hopes it will never have to fight."
