| Tonight it's my turn to make dinner and to my wife I preemptively say, again: Sorry! I'm not great in the kitchen. I don't have the patience or the skills. For most of our relationship, my partner and I have had one of those "she cooks, I clean" deals. But even though she really enjoys it, she has reached her limit. I don't blame her. "Most people I talk to — family, friends, people in line at the grocery checkout — are less than enthused about making dinner these late-pandemic days," writes Dawn Perry in a column I immediately texted to my wife after reading it. "And it's not because we all used to eat out at fabulous restaurants every night or can afford Grubhub nonstop. It's because there is seemingly no end to home cooking in sight — exhausting even for those of us who usually love it." I offered my cooking services after seeing my wife struggle to figure out what to make for lunch. I confess that I was not expecting her to accept. It really takes a lot of hard work and creativity to produce tasty dishes day after day. Yes, I was that clueless. And even if Perry really captures the struggles of pandemic cooking ("what once offered a sense of control feels like a thankless, endless exercise"), she also offers great tips to push through in the name of getting families eating together.
